Ryan Toews has recently completed and shared a very fine analysis illustrating a number of details of the Aichi D3A1 'Val', Type 99 Carrier Bomber (99 Shiki Kanjoh Bakugeki-ki - 九九式艦上爆撃機) known as 99 Kanbaku (九九艦爆) with an important goal being to compile a list of modifications and/or additions applicable to the 1/48 Hasegawa kit. The 19-page PDF 'Detailing the D3A1' presents full text with photos, schematics and colour data (sample page thumbnail below) and is available from Ryan on request. A direct link for requesting this PDF has now been added to the sidebar below the blog archive.
With special thanks to Ryan for sharing this excellent and valuable study and very kindly offering it to others via Aviation of Japan.

Thank you for sharing, I would definitely be interested in a copy as I have the Hasegawa 1/48 Pearl Harbor triple pack (A6M/B5N/D3A) that I would like to build for the 80th anniversary of the attack.

Another one very interested. I have two Hasegawa 1/48 kits. Thank you.
Idem for me !
Very interesting! This miht help a lot on correcting/kitbashing the 1/72 kits of the D3A1 I have on my stash.
Splendid! Great work!
I just saw the PDF and what I can say is amazing work!!! Ryan has done a magnificent job of compilation, there is a lot of information that I didn't know about the plane. This PDF is a 'must' for any Aichi Val fan.
I have to echo Pablo's comment. Essential stuff for the Hasegawa kit or any Val project. Great work, Ryan. Thanks for making it available here, Nick.
Realy it's a great job!
I don't model 1/48th scale, but I'm sure this will be of interest to anyone interested in modeling this aircraft.

Great stuff Ryan!!
This analysis is excellent and helped me build the Fujimi D3A1 model. If it wasn't for the Aviation of Japan blog, I would probably never find such interesting material :-) Thanks Nick! Thanks Ryan!
Ryan did a good job putting this pdf together. Thanks for this notice, Nick.
